Fatal crash in Markham leaves one dead, another seriously injured

Police are investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash in Markham that happened late Thursday morning. 

York Regional Police say the collision occurred at around 11:10 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2026, on Ninth Line, between Elgin Mills Road and 19th Avenue. 

Investigators say a red Hyundai Tucson was driving south when it collided with a white Hyundai Sonata that was travelling north. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. 

The 75-year-old driver of the Tucson was taken to hospital without vital signs and was pronounced dead. The 23-year-old driver of the Sonata was taken to a trauma centre and remains in serious condition.
