A deeply disturbing incident has come to light from North Hollywood, Los Angeles, where a 70-year-old Sikh man, Harpal Singh, was brutally attacked in what the community suspects to be a racially motivated hate crime. Singh was assaulted with a golf club while he was on his daily walk near a local gurdwara. He has since undergone three surgeries and remains unconscious in the hospital for over a week after the attack.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, believed to be in his 50s, arrived on a bike and launched a sudden and violent assault on Singh, hitting him multiple times in the face until he was left bloodied and unconscious. Singh was well-known in the local community for feeding birds and regularly meditating at the gurdwara.
Despite a week has passed since the incident, no arrests have been made, and police have not officially classified the case as a hate crime. This delay has caused growing frustration and fear among the Sikh community in the area.
Harpal Singh’s brother, Gurdyal Singh Randhawa, shared that his brother is in critical condition, suffering from multiple facial fractures and brain bleeding, and is currently in a coma. He also expressed disappointment over the lack of police action and accountability.
Eyewitnesses claimed that other bystanders were present during the assault, but no one intervened, further adding to the distress of the community.
On August 11, members of the local Sikh community gathered at the gurdwara to hold prayers for Harpal Singh’s recovery. They are now demanding increased police protection in the area and swift justice for the attacker.
Monica Rodriguez, LA City Council Member for District 7, responded by stating:
“An attack on any member of our community is an attack on all of us.”
Globally, including in India, this incident has sparked outrage. Former cricketer and AAP MP Harbhajan Singh condemned the attack and called for immediate action.
According to FBI data, the Sikh Coalition (ASC) highlighted that in 2024, there were 142 reported hate crimes against Sikh Americans, making them the third most targeted religious community in the United States.
