Peel Regional Police say a targeted enforcement initiative has led to multiple arrests following a surge in break-and-enters in east Mississauga.

Officers with the 12 Division break-and-enter unit launched Project Crackdown after investigators identified a sharp rise in incidents, averaging “roughly three break-and-enters per day,” according to Det. Dan Masters.

Police say video surveillance provided by residents and business owners played a critical role in the investigation. “We had really good video evidence,” Masters said, adding that crime analysts were able to “link occurrences together and identify a crime series,” including cases where “multiple victims were being victimized more than once.”

Investigators met face-to-face with community members, many of whom were first-time victims, to address concerns and gather information.

As a result of the operation, police laid 156 criminal charges, arrested 13 suspects, and executed 14 search warrants, leading to the recovery of stolen property. Police also confirmed the arrest of Daniel King in the spring of last year as part of the investigation.

Police say the initiative has improved public safety and strengthened relationships with the community. “We feel like the community is safer,” Masters said, noting the operation helped “alleviate some anxieties and fears.”

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.
