The City of Brampton has shared some tips for the safety of residents and pets after multiple waterfowl were found dead near two ponds. City said it was observed that waterfowl were found deceased at Professor’s Lake and Reginald Conover Pond in the area of McVean Drive and Cottrelle Boulevard. The city has said it suspects that these birds may be infected with avian influenza (bird flu).

The city stated that the risk of avian flu spreading to humans is extremely low and that there is currently no increased risk to public safety. Brampton Animal Services is working with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative to conduct evaluations and is following community health and safety protocols.

The City of Brampton said that signage will be installed in public spaces identified as hotspots to inform residents about avian influenza. The city has issued some recommendations for residents and pets.

City is advising residents to ensure animals are kept away from waterfowl and their droppings and avoid feeding or having any contact with wild birds. Cats should be kept indoors, while dogs must be kept on a leash in accordance with municipal bylaws. Pet owners should also avoid giving dogs or cats any raw meat from game birds or poultry.

Birds kept as pets should be kept indoors if they are not usually housed inside. In addition, bird feeders should be taken down or cleaned regularly with soap and water to lower the risk of bacterial or viral contamination.
