As per The Globe and Mail report Canadian border officials are working to locate nearly 600 foreign nationals with criminal records who are set to be deported but have gone missing. 431 of whom were convicted of serious offences such as sexual assault.

CBSA data shows that 599 out of 1,635 criminals have failed to attend deportation hearings and are now on the agency’s wanted list. Of these, 315 have been missing for over three years and 46 for more than two.

Another 401 are still in prison and will be deported after their release. While some high-risk individuals are detained, most live in the community under supervision or electronic monitoring. CBSA faces criticism over delays and weak enforcement, often due to lengthy court appeals.

Critics say Canada lacks strong action to track down these fugitives. Some have been evading capture for decades. Eighteen cases date back to before 2001 and remain unresolved.

The issue gained urgency after U.S. complaints about criminals crossing from Canada. In response, Ottawa increased border funding and labelled some gangs as terrorist groups. However, CBSA shut down its “Wanted” webpage in 2023, raising concerns over transparency. One missing offender, a convicted sex criminal from Ethiopia, still hasn’t been located. The agency won’t confirm if he’s been deported.
