Carney to visit India, Australia and Japan to boost trade, security and investment

Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to India, Australia and Japan from Feb. 26 to March 7, 2026, in a bid to expand trade, attract investment and strengthen Canada’s security partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said on her social media platform X that she will travel to India with the Prime Minister this week.

The Prime Minister’s Office says the trip is aimed at building “a stronger, more independent, and more resilient economy,” while diversifying Canada’s global trade relationships and drawing new international investment. 

Carney will begin in Mumbai and New Delhi, where he is scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions are expected to focus on expanding Canada–India ties through new partnerships in trade, energy, technology and artificial intelligence, as well as talent, culture and defence. Carney will also meet with business leaders to promote investment opportunities and strengthen commercial links between the two countries. 

The trip will then continue to Sydney and Canberra, where Carney will hold talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The leaders are expected to deepen cooperation on defence and maritime security, critical minerals, trade and advanced technologies, including AI. 

Carney will also deliver an address to both Houses of Australia’s Parliament ;the first such speech by a Canadian prime minister in nearly two decades and meet investors to encourage two-way trade and capital flows. 

In Tokyo, Carney will meet Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to strengthen collaboration on clean energy, advanced manufacturing, food security and critical minerals.
