Prime Minister Mark Carney’s plan to reduce government spending will include significant cuts to Canada’s foreign service.

Letters sent by the federal finance minister François-Philippe Champagne to all cabinet ministers this week instruct departments to identify 7.5% in savings for the next fiscal year. Global Affairs Canada is among the departments expected to make significant cuts.

The move has sparked concern among foreign policy experts. Senator Peter Boehm urged the government to reflect on Canada’s global responsibilities before reducing resources for diplomacy.

Former senior diplomat Alan Kessel also warned that scaling back the foreign service could erode Canada’s international influence and weaken its capacity to safeguard citizens abroad.
