RED FM host Shameel Jasvir recently spoke with Canada’s Federal Health Minister, Marjorie Michel, MP for Papineau, Quebec, in an in-depth interview on the challenges facing the country’s healthcare system. During the conversation, they discussed the pressures on Canada’s healthcare infrastructure and the role the federal government can play in supporting provinces, despite healthcare being primarily a provincial responsibility. The discussion focused on how Ottawa can work with provincial governments to strengthen the system and help address ongoing capacity and access issues.
The interview also explored the growing number of Canadians, particularly in Ontario, who do not have access to a family doctor and what measures the federal government can take to improve access to primary care. Shameel and the Minister further examined the broader question of whether Canada’s healthcare system, long considered a global model, is facing a funding shortfall or requires deeper reforms or structural changes to meet the evolving needs of Canadians.
