Regina, Saskatchewan – Two Brampton residents are facing multiple charges after Saskatchewan RCMP seized a large quantity of illegal tobacco and drugs during a highway stop earlier this week.
On July 7, RCMP officers pulled over a tractor-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway near Indian Head, a rural community approximately 70 kilometres east of Regina. The transport truck was reportedly en route from Ontario to British Columbia.
Following the stop, officers conducted a search of the truck and trailer, uncovering approximately 247 grams of opium and 490 boxes containing around 4.9 million unstamped cigarettes, according to an RCMP statement.
The driver and passenger were taken into custody at the scene. Manjinder Singh, 27, and Harmanjeet Singh, 23, both of Brampton, are now facing several charges. These include possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, as well as multiple offences under both the Tobacco Act and the Excise Act related to the untaxed cigarettes.
The two men are scheduled to return to provincial court in Indian Head this October.
