An Ontario man is facing multiple charges after RCMP officers seized more than nine million illegal cigarettes during a traffic stop on a Saskatchewan highway earlier this month.

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, highway patrol officers stopped a truck and trailer along Highway 16 in the Rural Municipality of Battle River shortly before 1 a.m. on Jan. 20. During the stop, officers discovered a significant quantity of illicit tobacco inside the trailer and arrested the driver.

Police say the man was already under court-ordered conditions that prohibited him from leaving Ontario due to previous tobacco-related charges.

Additional RCMP units from the Battlefords, along with the Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team based in Yorkton, assisted with the investigation. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 23 pallets of unstamped tobacco, containing an estimated 9.1 million illegal cigarettes.

Harwinder Kahlon, 41, of Brampton, Ont., has been charged with several offences, including trafficking in unstamped tobacco, possession of illicit tobacco, transporting improperly marked tobacco, and failing to comply with a court order.

Kahlon made his first court appearance in North Battleford provincial court on Jan. 21.
