The Ontario’s police watchdog Special Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that left a 40-year-old man dead in Windsor on March 18, 2026.
According to preliminary information, the incident began on the evening of March 18 when a man allegedly armed with a knife committed a robbery at a convenience store on Sandwich Street. Officers with the Windsor Police Service later located the suspect in the area of Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street.
SIU says an interaction took place in which conducted energy weapons were deployed, followed by two officers discharging their firearms. The man was struck and subsequently transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:35 p.m.
The Special Investigations Unit has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case as part of its ongoing review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has video or photographs to come forward and contact the lead investigator or submit information through the SIU’s online portal.
The investigation remains ongoing.
