Border officers in the Greater Toronto Area have intercepted more than 1,000 kilograms of illegal cannabis destined for international locations during the first two months of 2026.
From January 1 to February 28, 2026, officers with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), working alongside the RCMP Toronto Airport Detachment (TAD), stopped multiple attempts to smuggle cannabis out of Canada through travellers and commercial shipments.
Among the notable seizures, 72 kilograms of cannabis were discovered on January 9 at Toronto Pearson International Airport from a passenger travelling to the United Kingdom.
Ten days later, on January 19, border officers intercepted 61.5 kilograms from another passenger bound for the United Kingdom after a positive indication from a CBSA detector dog team.
In another case, officers in Mississauga seized 224 kilograms of cannabis from a commercial shipment destined for Germany on February 12. On February 24, while conducting examinations at a UPS facility in Hamilton, officers discovered 7 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside a parcel bound for the Netherlands.
The RCMP Toronto Airport Detachment (TAD) has launched a criminal investigation into the seizures; however, the number of suspects involved has not yet been determined.
While cannabis is legal in Canada, the Cannabis Act strictly prohibits the import or export of cannabis except under authorized circumstances.
Authorities say cannabis smuggling often supports organized crime and helps finance other illegal activities, including drug trafficking and weapons smuggling.
