Newmarket man charged in sexual assault investigation

York Regional Police have charged Michael Micallef, 40, of Newmarket, in connection with a sexual assault investigation. 

Police say a woman reported on March 3, 2026, that she had been sexually assaulted with a weapon and injured after meeting the suspect at a Newmarket bar and later going to his residence on February 28. 

Micallef was arrested on March 4 and faces multiple charges, including sexual assault with choking, sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault causing bodily harm, overcoming resistance by choking, and assault. 

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to contact York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7141, or Crime Stoppers. Support services are also available for victims.
