York Regional Police are investigating a shooting at a commercial plaza in Markham that occurred on Sunday morning, targeting a local business.
According to police, officers received a report of the incident on March 1, 2026 around 3 a.m. at a commercial plaza in the area of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue. Evidence at the scene indicates that gunfire struck the business, causing property damage. Fortunately, no one was present at the time, and there were no reported injuries.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows a dark-colored SUV arriving at the plaza, with occupants exiting the vehicle before the driver returned to the SUV and fled the scene. The vehicle was last observed heading east on Highland Park Boulevard. Investigators are urging anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police to come forward. Authorities are also seeking surveillance or dashcam footage from the area at the time of the shooting to aid in the investigation.
police also say that while there is community concern that the shooting may be linked to broader geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, police say no motive has been confirmed and the investigation remains ongoing. YRP stated, “We recognize these concerns and take them seriously. All available leads and evidence are being examined in close collaboration with policing and intelligence partners, including the possibility of politically motivated or transnational elements.”
