Two female youths arrested in suspected anti-East Asian hate-motivated assaults

The Toronto Police Service has announced arrests in a series of suspected hate-motivated assaults that took place in the city’s downtown core. 

Police allege that on Friday, February 20, 2026, at approximately 5:58 p.m., a woman was walking near King Street East and George Street when she was allegedly kicked from behind. When she turned around, she saw two suspects running away. 

Just minutes later, at around 6:00 p.m., a second victim was walking near King Street East and Sherbourne Street when they were assaulted from behind. Investigators allege racial slurs were directed at the victim before the suspects fled. 

Later that evening, at approximately 9:16 p.m., a third victim was struck in the head while riding an upward escalator after exiting a northbound train at Wellesley Station. The suspects again fled the scene. 

Police say the incidents are being investigated as suspected anti-East Asian hate crimes by the Hate Crime Unit. 

On February 23, 2026, a 14-year-old girl from Toronto was arrested and charged with two counts of assault. She is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on March 25, 2026. 

On February 25, 2026, a 12-year-old girl from Toronto was arrested and charged with three counts of assault. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 15, 2026. 

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identities of the accused cannot be released.
