A 58-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly making threats and hate-related comments toward several victims at restaurants and parking lots across Whitby earlier this month.
Durham Regional Police say the incidents occurred between February 11 and February 21, 2026, when the suspect allegedly attended several Tim Hortons locations and nearby parking areas, where he made threatening and hateful remarks toward employees and motorists.
On February 21, officers located the suspect in his vehicle in Whitby. Police initiated a traffic stop and took him into custody without incident. Investigators confirmed that Police confirmed that no victims sustained physical injuries during the incidents.
James Newlands, 58, of no fixed address, has been charged with five counts of uttering threats and one count of criminal harassment. Police note that the allegations have not yet been proven in court.
He was held for a bail hearing.
