Police in Brampton have seized their ninth illegal firearm of 2026 following a traffic stop earlier this month.

According to Peel Regional Police, officers from the 22 Division Community Intervention and Response Team stopped a vehicle near Main Street and Brickyard Way on the morning of Feb. 18. During the investigation, one suspect fled on foot but was quickly arrested. Police say officers recovered an illegal handgun and a loaded magazine.

Two men were charged in connection with the incident. Jamal Reid, 28, of Brampton, faces multiple firearm-related and other charges. Derek Asiedu, 27, of no fixed address, is charged with firearm-related offences, cocaine possession for purpose and driving motor vehicle with cannabis readily available in a vehicle.

Both men were held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice.

Police say frontline officers and investigators continue to focus on disrupting criminal activity and removing illegal firearms from the community. Since 2024, officers have seized 161 firearms across the region, with approximately 30 per cent of those recoveries resulting from traffic stops.
