The federal government is advising Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to Mexico as escalating violence and civil unrest disrupt flights and leave thousands stranded.
At a press conference on Feb. 23, 2026, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand urged Canadians in affected regions to follow local authorities’ instructions and travel only when it is safe to do so.
According to federal officials, organized criminal groups have triggered roadblocks, shootouts and explosions in several states, leading to shelter-in-place orders in parts of Jalisco and Nayarit. Puerto Vallarta is among the areas impacted, with reports indicating thousands of Canadians are currently stranded.
The Government of Canada is advising travellers to avoid non-essential travel to several states due to high levels of violence and organized crime. Air Canada says unrest in the Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta regions has led to flight disruptions. The airline is advising customers to remain at their accommodations and avoid travelling to airports until further notice. Ticket changes are being permitted without penalty for affected flights, subject to availability.
