The Ontario government is moving forward with renovations and an expansion of The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre in Whitby, aiming to significantly increase access to diabetes care across Durham Region.

According to the province, once complete, the centre’s annual capacity will grow from 2,000 to approximately 3,800 patients. The project is part of the province’s broader plan to strengthen Ontario’s health-care system, which includes nearly $60 billion in funding over the next decade for more than 50 major hospital projects.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Sylvia Jones said the investment will improve access to diabetes education and treatment, helping reduce complications and ease pressure on the health-care system.

The upgraded facility will feature expanded clinical space, private counselling rooms and child-friendly areas to enhance patient care. The Ministry of Health is currently working with the centre to complete detailed planning, including operational and space requirements. A construction timeline will be announced once the project is tendered and awarded.

Through “Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care,”the government is trying to modernize facilities and improve access to community-based health services across Ontario.
