Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will cut the jobs of 1,371 employees. The union representing these workers has criticized the decision, saying that “Agriculture Union categorically denounces these cuts, which point towards a looming food safety crisis in Canada.”
Agriculture Union represents approximately 4,500 CFIA employees. It said that during an all-staff town hall held yesterday, employees were informed that 1,371 positions would be eliminated. The union described the move as a “massive blow” that the struggling agency cannot absorb. According to the union, this is being done as part of federal government’s cost-cutting measures.
“When you make cuts to food safety, the outcomes are clear. More people will get sick from preventable foodborne illnesses, more poultry and livestock will die from avian flu and other diseases, and our food production industry will suffer,” says Milton Dyck, National President of the Agriculture Union.
