York Regional Police have confirmed the identity of the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in the City of Vaughan. The deceased has been identified as Sergio Lopes, 65, of Richmond Hill, who died as a result of gunshot wounds.
Police were called to a commercial plaza near Winges Road and Rowntree Dairy Road at approximately 1:08 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026, following reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital, where he later died.
While officers were at the scene, a separate call was received regarding a black SUV on fire on Kipling Avenue, north of Woodbridge Avenue. Investigators confirmed the burned vehicle matched the description of the suspect vehicle that fled the shooting scene. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Investigators are treating the incident as targeted.
Police are urging anyone who has not yet spoken with investigators, or who may have security or dash-cam footage from the area, to come forward.
