Armed suspect flees with cash after bank robbery in busy Richmond Hill plaza

Investigators with York Regional Police are appealing to the public for assistance as they continue to investigate a bank robbery in Richmond Hill. 

Police say the robbery occurred on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at approximately 2:20 p.m., at a bank located near Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road. Officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a robbery in progress. 

According to investigators, a male suspect entered the bank armed with a firearm, made threats, and fled the area with an undisclosed amount of cash. No injuries were reported during the incident. 

The suspect is described as approximately 5’9” tall with a medium build. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a black jacket, black pants, dark shoes, a black toque, black gloves, and a distinctive dinosaur-patterned scarf. 

Police note that the bank is located within a busy plaza with significant pedestrian traffic, and investigators believe witnesses may have observed suspicious activity before or after the robbery. Officers are also seeking dashcam footage from anyone who was in the area between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the day of the incident.
