Man killed in Vaughan shooting; Homicide Unit takes over investigation

An adult man has died following a shooting in Vaughan on Monday afternoon, prompting York Regional Police to launch a homicide investigation. 

Police were first called to the area of Weston Road and Colossus Drive at approximately 1:08 p.m. after reports that a male had been shot. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. 

Investigators initially described the suspect vehicle as a black SUV, and warned of significant road closures and a heavy police presence in the area as the investigation unfolded. Members of the public were asked to avoid the vicinity. 

In an update, York Regional Police confirmed that the Homicide Unit has assumed carriage of the case. Officers also responded to a vehicle fire in the area of Kipling Avenue and Woodbridge Avenue. Police say the burned vehicle matches the suspect description; a dark-coloured SUV. 

Investigators are now seeking to speak with any witnesses who have not yet contacted police.
