Two Brampton men charged after loaded illegal handgun found in vehicle during traffic stop

Two Brampton men are facing multiple firearms-related charges after Peel Regional Police discovered a loaded illegal handgun during a traffic stop early Monday morning. 

According to police, officers conducted a traffic stop at approximately 3 a.m. on Jan. 20 in the area of McLaughlin Road and Queen Street for a Highway Traffic Act infraction. During the stop, officers observed that the vehicle’s occupants were allegedly in violation of the Cannabis Control Act. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded illegal handgun. 

Eighteen-year-old Tyrique Charlton of Brampton has been charged with knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, two counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition knowing its possession was unauthorized, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, and failing to wear a seat belt as a passenger. 

Twenty-year-old Kevin Nguyen of Brampton faces similar charges, including knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, being an occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, two counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition knowing its possession was unauthorized, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, and having care and control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available. 

Both men were held in custody pending a bail hearing. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453-2121, extension 2233.
