The federal government will continue funding the national suicide crisis helpline for two more years.
Canada’s Minister of Health, Marjorie Michel, announced today that the federal government will invest $120.2 million over the next two years to support the continued operations of the 9-8-8 helpline. The 9-8-8 line is Canada’s Suicide Crisis Helpline and provides a critical service for Canadians in distress.
The 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline was launched on November 30, 2023. Government says that it has responded to over 800,000 calls and texts since its launch. It is Canada’s national suicide crisis support service for people experiencing a suicide crisis or those concerned about someone close to them.
Individuals can call or text 9-8-8 at any time to connect with trained responders who provide bilingual, trauma-informed, and culturally appropriate support. The service is operated by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in partnership with 37 network partners across Canada.
