Armed suspects arrested after failed carjacking in Markham driveway

York Regional Police have charged two Toronto men and recovered a loaded firearm following an attempted carjacking in Markham last week. 

Police say the incident happened on Friday, January 2, 2026, at around 6:45 p.m., in the area of Daffodil Avenue and Doncrest Drive. Investigators allege the victim had just pulled into a residential driveway when a suspect vehicle blocked his car. One of the suspects then approached the victim while armed with a firearm. 

The victim was able to escape the situation and contact police. Officers responded quickly, and the two suspects fled the scene on foot. They were arrested a short distance away, and a loaded firearm was recovered during the investigation. 

Police have identified the accused as Jinquan Shen, 33, of Toronto, and Jett Cortez De Guzman, 38, also of Toronto. 

Shen has been charged with robbery with a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm, disguise with intent, possession of a firearm obtained by crime, and breach of probation. 

De Guzman is facing the same charges, including robbery with a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm, disguise with intent, possession of a firearm obtained by crime, and breach of probation. In addition, he has been charged with operation of a conveyance while prohibited and driving while under suspension. 

Police have identified the accused as Jinquan Shen, 33, of Toronto, and Jett Cortez De Guzman, 38, also of Toronto. 

Police say both suspects were on probation at the time of the offence for unrelated matters. 

Investigators have released the images of the accused, believing they may be linked to additional offences and that there could be more victims. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has video surveillance or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the attempted carjacking, to come forward.
