Toronto police arrest man wanted in a suspicious incident at a subway station

Toronto Police Service has arrested a suspect in the investigation of an alleged incident in which a person attempted to set someone’s jacket on fire at Kennedy Subway Station in Toronto on Sunday. 

On Sunday, December 28, 2025, a victim was standing on the platform at the subway station when the suspect approached and allegedly tried to set the victim’s jacket on fire. No injuries were reported in the incident. The suspect fled the scene. 

Police said that the following day, Monday, December 29, 2025, a similar incident occurred at Scarborough Town Centre. The victim had left their jacket on a chair inside the mall when the suspect allegedly set the jacket on fire and then left. Outside the mall, near one of the entrances, the suspect also allegedly attempted to set another person’s clothing on fire. 

police said in a news release that Donald McFarlane, 47, of Toronto, was identified as the suspect and arrested. He has been charged with the following offenses: 

  • Assault with a weapon 
  • Arson / Damage to property 
  • Two counts of common nuisance 
  • Causing a disturbance 
  • Four counts of failure to comply with probation 

He is expected to attend a court hearing at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., in courtroom 103.
