Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) has issued a localized flooding warning for parts of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon due to ongoing rainfall combined with melting snow.
CVC says widespread flooding along the Credit River and its major tributaries is not expected at this time. However, officials warn that low-lying and flood-prone areas could experience localized ponding and rising water levels.
The conservation authority cautioned that urban streams and ice-covered waterways may be particularly dangerous, especially near culverts, bridges and dams. Residents are being advised to stay away from all watercourses and to keep children and pets well clear of riverbanks and streams.
According to CVC, frozen ground conditions are limiting the soil’s ability to absorb rainfall. In addition, above-freezing temperatures over the past several days have accelerated snowmelt, increasing runoff into local waterways. There is also a risk of ice jams forming, which could cause sudden and unpredictable water level changes.
