Markham–Unionville MP Michael Ma has left the Conservative Party and joined the Liberal government caucus led by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The Liberal Party released a statement Friday confirming the move. Ma said the decision followed weeks of conversations with constituents and discussions with his family about Canada’s future. He has formally notified the Speaker of the House and the Leader of the Opposition.
“This is a time for unity and decisive action,” Ma said. He added that he entered public service to help people and focus on solutions rather than division.
Ma, who immigrated to Canada at age 12 as the youngest of seven children, said hard work and resilience have shaped his life and career. He said those values now guide his decision to support the Liberal government.
“In that spirit, I have concluded that Prime Minister Mark Carney is offering the steady, practical approach we need to deliver on the priorities I hear every day while door knocking in Markham–Unionville. That includes making life more affordable, growing a strong Canadian economy, strengthening community safety, and creating real opportunities for young people and families who are working hard to build their Canadian dream” said Ma in a statement .
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the move. He said Ma has chosen to support policies he was elected to oppose.
With Ma’s switch, the Liberals now hold 171 seats in the House of Commons. The party is just one seat short of a majority government. Last month, Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont also left the Conservatives to join the Liberals.
