The Government of Canada has announced a significant expansion to its national list of terrorist entities. Officials say the move targets groups that recruit and radicalize young people online. The new listings are meant to strengthen Canada’s response to growing threats of hate, intimidation, and violent extremism.
Public Safety Minister, Gary Anandasangaree, has announced that four organizations; 764, Maniac Murder Cult, Terrorgram Collective, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, also known as Daesh) affiliate Islamic State–Mozambique , have now been formally added to the list of “terrorist groups” under the Criminal Code.
Canada is the first country to list the extremist network 764. Authorities say these groups use social media, encrypted platforms, and online gaming to spread propaganda and encourage violence.
The listings give police and intelligence agencies stronger legal tools. All property linked to these groups in Canada must be frozen and reported to the RCMP or CSIS. It is now a criminal offence to deal with their assets or provide them with financial or material support. Immigration officials can also use these designations when making admissibility decisions.
Minister Anandasangaree emphasized that “the groups we have just listed prey upon people who are at-risk, especially our youth, and they must be stopped. By listing these groups, we have more powerful and effective tools to take action and thwart their efforts to incite violence and promote hate.”
Officials say the government will continue monitoring emerging threats and updating the terrorist listings as needed to safeguard Canadians and strengthen national security.
