Travel company Transat A.T. Inc., that owns Air Transat, says that a tentative agreement reached with its roughly 750 pilots’ union on Tuesday evening has prevented the strike that was set to begin on Wednesday.

It is worth noting that after nearly a year of negotiations with no resolution, The Air Line Pilots Association, the union representing about 750 Air Transat pilots had issued a 72-hour strike notice to the company on Sunday, which meant pilots could have gone on strike starting 3 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

In anticipation of a possible strike, Air Transat began cancelling flights on Monday and by Tuesday it cancelled over a dozen flights affecting thousands of passengers. Cancelled flights included destinations in Mexico, Peru, Spain, the Dominican Republic, London and Paris. However, the tentative deal reached late Tuesday night has averted the strike.

Union members will likely vote on the agreement in the coming days. No details of the agreement have been released so far by either Air Transat or the union. Air Transat pilots demanded a modern contract with industry-standard pay, benefits, work rules and job security to replace their current 2015 agreement.
