Ontario’s high-profile  lawyer, Deepak Paradkar, has had his licence temporarily suspended by the Law Society of Ontario. The Society says the evidence currently available suggests an urgent suspension was required to protect the public interest.

Paradkar, who has been practising since 1993, was arrested in November at his home in the GTA. He is facing serious U.S. allegations, including working for alleged drug kingpin Ryan Wething, assisting a cocaine-trafficking network, and involvement in a conspiracy to murder an FBI’s key confidential informant.

His lawyer says Paradkar accepts the suspension but denies all allegations, adding that he intends to put forward a vigorous legal defence at the appropriate time.

Paradkar remains in custody at a Toronto jail as he awaits extradition to the United States, where he could face a potential life sentence if convicted.
