A 66-year-old City of Toronto garbage truck driver has died after being struck by the very vehicle he was operating on Tuesday morning in Scarborough.
Toronto police say the incident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. near Middleport Crescent and Pennyhill Drive, just southeast of Finch Avenue and Neilson Road. According to investigators, the worker had stepped out of the truck when it began to roll. The vehicle then struck the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ontario’s Ministry of Labour has launched an investigation. No further details about the circumstances have been released as the investigation continues.
In a statement, the City of Toronto confirmed the victim was a municipal employee. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to our colleagues, friends and peers, and are committed to supporting our employees during this difficult time,” the city said.
The Toronto Civic Employees Union Local 416 identified the worker as a member of the Solid Waste unit. “On behalf of Local 416 and all our members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the worker who lost his life while on the job,” the union said, adding that they are working with the Ministry of Labour, Toronto police, and the city to determine what happened.
