Peel Regional Police are warning residents about a series of distraction-style thefts in Brampton that have specifically targeted elderly community members.
Investigators from the 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau say several incidents have been reported in which suspects approach seniors who are walking alone. The suspects often attempt to start a conversation and encourage the victim to come closer to a nearby vehicle. In some cases, language barriers make it difficult for victims to fully understand the interaction.
Once the victim is close, the suspects either snatch the victim’s jewellery or perform a quick swap with fake jewellery before fleeing. Police say that in certain incidents, a female suspect first engages the victim, while a male suspect exits a vehicle moments later to forcibly remove their jewellery.
Police are urging the public to be cautious when approached by strangers, particularly individuals in vehicles attempting to initiate conversation with seniors. They are asking residents to stay alert, report suspicious behaviour, and check in with elderly family members and neighbours to ensure they are aware of the scam.
Anyone with information, surveillance footage, or dashcam video is asked to contact the 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453-2121, ext. 2133. Anonymous tips can be provided to Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
