In an interview with Red FM Toronto, MPP Hardeep Grewal strongly defended the Ford government’s decision to ban municipal speed cameras under Bill 56 ‘Building a More Competitive Economy Act.’ He said the move was about restoring fairness for drivers and ending what he called “a cash grab” by municipalities. Grewal explained that although speed cameras were first introduced to protect school and community safety zones, many cities have used them to generate revenue instead of improving safety. He added that tickets often arrive weeks later and don’t stop real-time speeding. According to Grewal, no new tickets will be issued after November 14, once the law takes effect, though existing fines will still need to be paid.
Grewal said the government’s focus will now shift toward real traffic-calming infrastructure;such as speed bumps, roundabouts, raised pedestrian crossings, and better signage, which he believes physically prevent dangerous driving. He also revealed that the province will soon announce funding to help municipalities build these measures, noting that existing speed-camera equipment might be repurposed for public-safety uses like stolen-vehicle tracking. Addressing concerns about cost and emergency access, Grewal said new designs will balance safety with practicality. He concluded by stressing that the goal isn’t to punish drivers but to make communities genuinely safer. “Road safety,” he said, “is our number-one priority, but it must never come through unfair fines or tax grabs.”
