Tensions are rising between Unifor and Stellantis after the automaker announced it will shift production of the Jeep Compass from Ontario’s Brampton Assembly Plant to a U.S. facility, a move seen as threatening the future of Canada’s auto industry. In an interview To RED FM Toronto this morning ,Vito Beato ; President of Unifor Local 1285 called on Stellantis to reverse its decision, describing the shift as a direct threat to Canadian autoworkers and “ground zero” for the country’s auto industry. Beato argued that the company’s actions violate both Unifor’s collective agreement and prior government commitments, warning of broader job losses if the situation is not addressed. He urged Prime Minister Carney’s government to leverage trade tools and impose tariffs, stressing, “If you want to sell here, you’ve got to build here.” “Solidarity demonstrations” are currently underway at both the Brampton and CAMI Ingersoll plants, as Unifor intensifies its campaign to secure stronger protections for Canadian auto jobs and push Stellantis to reverse its course.
