York Regional Police say a Toronto man has been charged following a violent, hate-motivated assault on a hotel employee in Markham late last month.
Officers were called to a hotel near Highway 7 East and Commerce Valley Drive West around 3 a.m. on September 28, 2025, after reports of an assault in progress. When police arrived, they found a 54-year-old hotel employee suffering from serious head injuries. The victim was taken to a trauma centre for treatment, and the suspect was arrested nearby
According to investigators, the incident began when an intoxicated guest became aggressive after his credit card was declined while attempting to pay for a room. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly became enraged upon learning that the employee was Muslim. Police say he then threatened to kill the victim, chased him into a room, and violently assaulted him.
As a result of the investigation, 31-year-old Geethansan Sriranjan of Toronto has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats.
York Regional Police say they take hate-motivated crimes extremely seriously and are committed to protecting all members of the community. “Hate has no place in our community,” the service said in a statement. “All reports of hate crime or hate/bias incidents will be investigated thoroughly.”
