Toronto Police Service says two men from Ajax have been arrested following a fraud and stolen vehicle investigation.
On Friday, September 26, officers responded to reports of a vehicle being driven dangerously in the area of Warden Avenue and Ellesmere Road. According to investigators, the suspects were posing as a food delivery worker and a customer when they approached a victim in a parking lot. Police allege the men told the victim their debit card was not working, and one of them offered cash if the victim would use their own card to pay for pizza. During the exchange, the second suspect allegedly provided a stolen point-of-sale terminal. The victim’s credit card was then stolen and replaced with another card. Officers arrived during the incident and intervened.
Investigators say the two men were later located inside a stolen Honda Civic. They allegedly attempted to flee, disguising their faces, but were stopped and taken into custody. Police report the vehicle carried false license plates and contained evidence linked to fraud-related activity.
One of the suspects, 21 year old Jamal Raja of Ajax, is facing dozens of charges, including 24 counts of failing to comply with a probation order, 21 counts of possessing or using credit cards obtained by crime, possession of stolen property, possession of forged documents, forgery, dangerous driving, fleeing police, and disguise with intent. He appeared in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Saturday, September 27.
The second suspect, 18 year old Joshua Mawaka, also of Ajax, faces charges including 21 counts of possessing or using credit cards obtained by crime, possession of stolen property, forgery, theft under $5,000, fraud under $5,000, and disguise with intent. He also appeared in court on September 27.
Police believe there may be additional victims and have released images of both accused. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Toronto police at 416-808-4100 or to provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
