Toronto, ON – Air Canada and the union representing its flight attendants have reached a tentative agreement to end a strike that disrupted travel across the country since Saturday morning.
The airline confirmed it will begin restoring operations on Tuesday, with the first flights scheduled for Tuesday evening. However, officials cautioned that it may take seven to 10 days for the full flight schedule to return to normal, as aircraft and crew remain out of position. In the meantime, some cancellations will continue.
“Only customers with confirmed bookings whose flights are shown as operating should go to the airport,” Air Canada advised, noting that passengers with cancelled flights will be offered rebooking on other airlines where possible, as well as refunds or travel credits.
The breakthrough came after marathon negotiations with the help of a federal mediator. The tentative agreement will now be presented to members of the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
“Your right to vote on your wages was preserved,” the union said in a statement, adding that members are expected to fully cooperate with the resumption of operations.
The federal government intervened at the start of the strike, invoking Section 107 of the Labour Code to force the parties into binding arbitration. The union initially defied the order, but the Canada Industrial Relations Board later declared the strike unlawful.
If ratified, the deal is expected to bring an end to days of uncertainty for tens of thousands of travellers affected by the labour dispute.
