Calgary, AB – Calgary police have issued arrest warrants for four Ontario residents in connection with a taxi fraud scheme that allegedly stole more than $28,000 from victims in Calgary and other cities across Canada.

The four individuals — Arvinder Singh (24), Martin Hidec Siron (19), Matthew Tani (24), and Ibrahim Kald (24) — are facing a total of 64 charges linked to 18 separate fraud incidents reported in Calgary between July 9 and 14, 2024.

According to Calgary police, the suspects used two main methods to carry out the frauds. In one approach, a suspect would pretend to be a stranded passenger, asking strangers to help pay a taxi fare — usually between $7 and $7.50 — in exchange for $10 cash. In the other, one of the suspects posed as a taxi driver and took legitimate fares.

In both cases, victims were handed a point-of-sale (POS) terminal and told the tap function didn’t work, requiring them to insert their debit card and enter their PIN. The suspects allegedly used skimming devices to capture the PIN and would swap the victim’s card with a stolen one during the transaction.

Police say the group then used the stolen cards to withdraw cash from ATMs or make purchases of prepaid Visa or gift cards.

The suspects are not believed to have been licensed taxi drivers in Calgary. Investigators say similar fraudulent activity has been reported in Edmonton, Toronto, and across the Metro Vancouver area.

Authorities believe the four individuals have left Alberta and are currently residing in Ontario. They are wanted on Alberta-wide warrants.

Charges:

  • Arvinder Singh (24): 24 charges, including 17 counts of credit card theft
  • Martin Hidec Siron (19): 21 charges, including 15 counts of credit card theft
  • Matthew Tani (24): 11 charges
  • Ibrahim Kald (24): 8 charges

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is urged to contact Calgary Police or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
