Toronto, ON – A man in his 20s was killed in a shooting early Thursday morning in the parking lot of Yorkdale Shopping Centre, prompting a homicide investigation and heightened police presence in the area.

Toronto police responded to reports of gunfire just before 6:15 a.m. near the north-east parking lot of the mall, located by Highway 401 and Dufferin Street. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin.

“This does not appear to be a random act,” said Detective Sajeev Nair from the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit, speaking to media at the scene. He confirmed that the investigation is in its early stages, and details regarding possible suspects or motives remain unclear.

Yorkdale Mall was closed at the time of the shooting, according to a statement from mall officials. The mall expressed condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized that “violence, especially gun violence, has no place in our city.”

While Yorkdale Shopping Centre remains open, entrances on the northeast side of the property and a section of the parking lot will stay closed while police conduct their investigation.

Nair added that residents and shoppers can expect to see an increased police presence at the site over the coming days.

“We understand how alarming this kind of violence can be, especially in a public and familiar location like a mall,” he said. “We are committing all available resources to this case.”

Police are urging anyone who may have been in the area Thursday morning or who has dashcam or surveillance footage to contact investigators.
