Brampton, ON — Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown is under police protection after receiving threats against himself and his family, according to Peel Regional Police (PRP).

The increased security comes as police assess the situation and carry out an active investigation. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, PRP Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich confirmed that the threats originated within Canada and that officers are taking precautionary steps to ensure the mayor’s safety.

“This was really preventative and done out of an abundance of caution,” said Milinovich. “At times, people receive threats and we’re concerned about them. We will take all necessary measures to mitigate any risk to them and their family.”

Mayor Brown, also present at the news conference for an unrelated case, addressed the threats directly.

“I certainly want my family to be safe — and I believe they are,” said Brown. “But it won’t change my approach to speak out about public safety or to continue doing my job. I have great confidence in Peel police.”

While the exact nature of the threats has not been disclosed, investigators say they are withholding further details to avoid compromising the case.

This is not the first time Mayor Brown has faced threats, and he indicated it likely won’t be the last. Still, he emphasized his commitment to addressing crime and safety issues head-on.

Police say they will release more information as the investigation progresses.
