Mississauga, ON – More than 60 public complaints were filed with the City of Mississauga over the Canada Day holiday regarding the illegal use of fireworks, marking a noticeable spike compared to previous years.

According to city officials, a total of 63 complaints were submitted to the bylaw enforcement department during the July 1 celebrations. This marks a significant increase from the 34 complaints received during Canada Day in 2024 and even surpasses the 52 complaints recorded over the Victoria Day weekend this past May.

In addition to public reports, 221 proactive inspections of fireworks vendors were conducted between June 20 and July 1 by city bylaw officers. These inspections resulted in two charges being laid for the non-permitted sale of fireworks.

The rise in complaints comes despite the city’s efforts to inform the public ahead of the holiday. A city spokesperson stated that Mississauga launched an “extensive public education campaign” prior to Canada Day, which included distributing safety handouts through fireworks vendors. These materials outlined permitted times for fireworks use, safety protocols, and key bylaw regulations.

To bolster compliance, bylaw enforcement officers were deployed across the city during the holiday period to monitor both the illegal sale and improper use of fireworks. Violations included individuals setting off fireworks without a permit on non-designated days or outside of approved private property use.

Under Mississauga’s bylaws, residents are allowed to use fireworks on their own property without a permit only on specific holidays: Canada Day, Victoria Day, Diwali, Lunar New Year, and New Year’s Eve/Day. Any fireworks use outside of these designated dates requires a special permit from the city.

City officials are encouraging residents to continue reporting violations and to adhere to local regulations to ensure public safety during future celebrations.
