Toronto, ON- In a deeply tragic incident, an Indian international student has died by suicide in Canada. The deceased, identified as 26-year-old Lovepreet Singh, was a native of Rajpura, Abohar in Punjab. He had come to Canada around two and a half years ago on a study visa and had recently completed his education from Algoma University, Brampton campus. He was currently residing in Canada on a work permit.
Lovepreet was the only son of his parents and had earlier earned a BSc in Agriculture from Amritsar before moving abroad for higher studies. His close friend, Ankit Jandu, shared emotional details about the incident in an interview with Red FM.
According to Ankit, Lovepreet had been struggling with depression for the past 7–8 months. He had made two previous suicide attempts and had shared his mental health struggles with his parents. To help him, his parents requested that he return to India, even temporarily, hoping a change of environment might benefit him. Despite their efforts and emotional support from his friends, Lovepreet continued to suffer silently.
On July 2, when his roommates stepped out to run some errands, Lovepreet stayed behind, saying he wanted to watch a movie. When his friends returned, they found that he had died by suicide using a noose. Emergency services were called immediately, and paramedics performed CPR for nearly 30 minutes. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
There are reports of a suicide note, although Red FM has not confirmed its existence currently. The police have conducted the post-mortem, but no official statement on autopsy has been released yet. Ankit has started a fundraiser on GoFundMe to send Lovepreet’s dead body back to India so that his parents can perform his final rites.
