Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are set to sign a memorandum of understanding next week to advance what officials are calling a “transformative” public infrastructure initiative. The project is aimed at opening new export routes for Alberta’s oil and gas and Ontario’s critical minerals through a network of pipelines, rail lines, and ports.
The agreement, expected to be signed Monday, July 7, marks a major step toward deepening interprovincial cooperation on energy and trade. Premier Ford, who currently chairs the Council of the Federation, has used his position to advocate for greater economic integration and freer trade between provinces.
In the lead-up to the announcement, Ford and Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce hosted a roundtable discussion with Premier Smith and senior Alberta officials to outline a shared vision for expanding Canada’s export infrastructure.
“In support of our plan to protect Ontario, Premier Ford will unveil and spearhead a truly transformative and job-creating infrastructure project that will support the economic independence and energy security of Ontario and all of Canada,” read an internal memo circulated by Ford’s Chief of Staff.
The initiative aims to create a strategic corridor that would facilitate the movement of Western Canadian energy and Ontario’s mined critical minerals to both domestic and global markets — a move seen as key to strengthening Canada’s supply chains and reducing dependence on foreign sources.
