The Ontario government is moving forward with a major infrastructure project in Barrie, replacing the Dunlop Street bridge to pave the way for the future expansion of Highway 400 to 10 lanes. The bridge replacement marks a key step in the province’s nearly $30 billion investment plan aimed at modernizing Ontario’s highway network, easing traffic congestion, and bolstering the economy.
“Replacing the Dunlop Street bridge is a crucial step in widening Highway 400 near Barrie, which will reduce gridlock and save time for the more than 100,000 drivers who rely on this stretch of highway every day,” said Ric Bresee, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation. “As Ontario continues to grow, our government is making historic investments in the infrastructure needed to support that growth.”
The project will generate nearly 500 construction-related jobs, employing engineers, labourers, and heavy equipment operators. Plans include replacing the existing Dunlop Street underpass at Highway 400, modifying the structure to support a 10-lane highway, installing a taller concrete median barrier, and widening Dunlop Street between the interchange ramps.
Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall welcomed the news, emphasizing the impact the project will have on local transportation. “The replacement of the Dunlop bridge will reduce gridlock, improve travel times and make it easier for residents to get around the city,” he said. “We’re grateful for the continued investment from the Ontario government in these critical infrastructure projects.”
The Highway 400 widening is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to support job creation and maintain economic resilience in the face of global uncertainties, including U.S. tariffs.
