Brampton, Ontario – A man from Brampton is facing charges after 187 kilograms of cocaine were discovered hidden inside a commercial truck entering Canada from the United States at the Blue Water Bridge border crossing in Sarnia.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported that the truck was referred for a secondary inspection upon arrival on June 12. During the search, border officers, with the help of a drug detection dog, found 161 bricks of suspected cocaine concealed within six boxes.
The CBSA estimates the street value of the seized drugs at $23.2 million.
Karamveer Singh, 27, of Brampton, was arrested at the border and handed over to the RCMP. He faces charges of cocaine importation and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree praised the seizure, stating, “The safety and security of Canadians is our government’s top priority. This seizure highlights the vital role that the CBSA and RCMP play in preventing illegal contraband from entering our communities. This was excellent work by officers.”
So far this year, the CBSA has confiscated 978 kilograms of cocaine at Southern Ontario ports of entry. This recent seizure marks the fourth major cocaine bust at the Blue Water Bridge this year.
The incident follows a June 10 news conference where Peel police announced the seizure of 479 kilograms of bricked cocaine, valued at approximately $47.9 million, after a year-long investigation into a group allegedly smuggling drugs into Canada using commercial trucks.
