Global News, citing sources, has reported that a suspected Indian government agent closely monitored NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, leading the RCMP to place him under police protection in 2023.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the agent, allegedly linked to activities directed by the Indian government, had access to intimate knowledge of Singh’s daily routines, travel, and family.

The Global News report further stated that sources described this agent as being associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a group that the Indian government has been accused of using to commit violence in Canada.

Police notified Singh in late 2023 about a credible threat to his life, subsequently implementing tight security around him and his residences. Singh himself revealed during the 2025 federal election that he had been under police protection.

However, details of the investigation had not been publicly disclosed until now. Singh has maintained that the RCMP never explicitly told him who was behind the threat, though “the implication was a foreign government.”

Police responded to the threat at the time, and Singh is no longer considered to be in imminent danger. Jagmeet Singh lost his seat in the 2025 federal election and has since stepped down as NDP leader.

The accusation that a suspected Indian agent was gathering information on the daily movements of a federal party leader is expected to raise new questions about foreign interference. This comes at a sensitive time, as Canada has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit, an invitation that Sikh organizations, the NDP, and Liberal leaders are also opposing.
