14 year old charged after hate-motivated calls target Jewish institutions

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hate Crime Prevention Unit have charged a youth in connection with a series of hate-motivated incidents across York Region and the City of Toronto. 

Police say that in November 2025, they received multiple reports of indecent and hate-motivated communications targeting members of the Jewish community. Investigators allege the suspect made anti-Semitic comments over the phone to staff at synagogues, community centres, and Jewish schools in both York Region and Toronto. 

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the Town of Newmarket, where the youth suspect was arrested. During the search, police also located a quantity of a controlled substance believed to be psilocybin. 

A 14-year-old male from Newmarket has been charged with: 

  • Mischief Relating to Religious Property (10 counts) 
  • Indecent Communications (10 counts) 
  • Possession of a Schedule III Substance 

The investigation remains ongoing.
