Ontario NDP MPP from Parkdale- High Park, Alexa Gilmour has called on the Ford government to take urgent action to fix the massive delays in the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). During a phone interview with RED FM Toronto, she said hundreds of skilled workers have been waiting over 500 days for their applications to be processed. Many now face expiring work permits, job losses, and uncertainty for their families.

Gilmour said federal funding limits are not an excuse for Ontario’s inaction. She called on the province to request work-permit extensions, as Manitoba did, and criticized the OINP’s silence toward applicants. People’s calls and emails, she said, go unanswered for months, leaving them unable to plan their futures. “It’s not just about processing speed,” she said. “It’s about respect and honesty.”

Responding to Labour Minister David Piccini’s remark that “citizenship is a privilege, not a right,” Gilmour said it dismisses the workers who help Ontario’s economy. She called the delays unfair and harmful, urging both levels of government to clear the backlog and restore trust. The NDP, she added, will keep pushing for fairness, clarity, and transparency for affected workers .
